The Oil Cleansing Method: How to Wash Your Face with Natural Oils
Share
It sounds counterintuitive. Washing your face with oil. But the Oil Cleansing Method (OCM) is one of the most effective, science-aligned approaches to facial cleansing — and it’s particularly well-suited to Indian skin types that struggle with the dual burden of excess sebum and dehydration.
The principle is rooted in basic chemistry: like dissolves like. Cold-pressed oils dissolve the sebum, sunscreen, pollution particles, and makeup that water-based cleansers leave behind — without stripping the skin’s natural moisture barrier in the process.
Why Conventional Cleansers Are Damaging Your Skin
Most face washes — even those marketed as “gentle” — contain sulphates (SLS, SLES) or other surfactants that strip the skin’s natural sebum. This triggers a vicious cycle: the skin detects moisture loss and overproduces oil to compensate, leading to the oily-yet-dehydrated skin that is extremely common across India’s humid climate zones.
Stripping the skin barrier also increases sensitivity to pollution — a critical concern in Indian metros where PM2.5 levels regularly exceed safe limits.
🌿 Expert Insight — Prasadhak Wellness Team
“The most common concern we hear from customers trying OCM for the first time is ‘won’t oil make me break out?’ The answer depends entirely on which oil you use. High-linoleic, low-oleic oils like grapeseed and rosehip are non-comedogenic and actually help regulate sebum production. It’s the high-oleic oils — like pure olive oil — that can clog pores for acne-prone skin. Choosing the right oil for your skin type is everything.”
How the Oil Cleansing Method Works
- Apply oil to dry skin — do not wet your face first. Use 3–5 drops and massage gently in circular motions for 60 seconds, focusing on areas with makeup, sunscreen, or congestion.
- Steam or warm cloth — soak a clean washcloth in warm (not hot) water, wring it out, and press it gently against your face for 20–30 seconds. This opens pores and allows the oil to lift impurities.
- Wipe away — gently remove the oil with the warm cloth using light, downward strokes. Do not scrub.
- Rinse if needed — for oily skin, follow with a gentle, sulphate-free cleanser. For dry or normal skin, the oil cleanse alone is often sufficient.
- Moisturise — apply your usual serum or moisturiser while skin is still slightly damp.
The Best Oils for Oil Cleansing by Skin Type
Oily and Acne-Prone Skin
Best choice: Cold-Pressed Grapeseed Oil
Grapeseed oil has one of the lowest comedogenic ratings (0–1) and is exceptionally high in linoleic acid — the fatty acid that regulates sebum production. Studies show that acne-prone skin is often deficient in linoleic acid, making grapeseed oil an ideal cleanser and rebalancer.

Dry and Dehydrated Skin
Best choice: Cold-Pressed Almond Oil
Rich in Vitamin E and oleic acid, almond oil melts into dry skin beautifully, dissolving impurities while leaving a nourishing residue that supports the skin barrier. Ideal for dry Indian skin in winter months.

Combination Skin
Best choice: Cold-Pressed Rosehip Seed Oil
Rosehip oil’s balanced fatty acid profile — high in linoleic acid with moderate oleic acid — makes it ideal for combination skin. It cleanses without over-stripping the dry zones or congesting the oily T-zone.

Mature and Sun-Damaged Skin
Best choice: Cold-Pressed Argan Oil
Argan oil’s high Vitamin E and squalene content make it an exceptional cleansing oil for mature skin — it removes impurities while simultaneously delivering antioxidant protection and deep moisture.
Sensitive Skin
Best choice: Cold-Pressed Coconut Oil (fractionated) or Almond Oil
For reactive skin, almond oil’s mild, hypoallergenic profile makes it the safest starting point. Always patch test on the inner arm before applying to the face.

Common OCM Mistakes That Cause Breakouts
- Using the wrong oil for your skin type — high-oleic oils (olive, avocado) can clog pores for acne-prone skin
- Not massaging long enough — 60 seconds minimum is needed to properly dissolve impurities
- Using water that’s too hot — this can cause broken capillaries; warm is sufficient
- Scrubbing with the cloth — always use gentle, downward strokes
- Not patch testing first — always test a new oil on your inner arm for 24 hours before facial use
- Expecting instant results — skin typically takes 2–4 weeks to adjust to OCM; initial purging is normal

All oils used in the oil cleansing method should be 100% cold-pressed and free from synthetic additives — refined oils lack the fatty acids and vitamins that make OCM effective.
